  • Rotary speech contests upcoming

    The Rotary Clubs of Prospect Goshen, LaGrange & South Oldham will be holding a Speech Contest for area High School students. Eligible students are those who are public, private, independent or home taught students. Students are to prepare their speech by discussing this year’s Theme, “Light Up Rotary.” This can be applied to the student’s personal observations and experiences or to Rotary or other organizations that have similarly engaged and changed lives on a local, national or international level.

  • Nominations needed for Oldham County Day grand marshals

    The Project Guild of La Grange is now accepting nominations for grand marshal of the 2015 Oldham County Day Parade.

    Oldham County Day – always the third Saturday in July – is slated for Saturday, July 18.

    Each year, members of the Project Guild of La Grange select a grand marshal by way of nominations from the community. Criteria for this honor is that the person must be a current (or past) resident of Oldham County and he or she must have devoted his or her time and talents for the good and betterment of our community.

  • Local resident helps Lions Eye Foundation

    Above left, Oldham County resident Ralph Richardson (right in photo) presents a trophy he made to Chuck Carlson, president of the Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation. Above right, Richardson, honored as Kentucky Mr. Basketball in 1958, also took a picture with Donna Murphy, the first-ever Kentucky Miss Basketball, at the event.

    Deadline soon for Watson Scholarship

    The H. Glenn Watson Conservation Scholarship is given in memory of conservation educator Glenn Watson who served on the Oldham County Conservation District Board (OCCD) for 14 years.

    The H. Glenn Watson Conservation Award was established to benefit students who, like Glenn, see the importance of caring for the environment and who regularly give back to their community by volunteering in Oldham County.

    Valetine’s in the Valley

    Valentine’s in the Valley, a Pewee Valley Presbyterian Church Youth Group sponsored event featuring “Dave Mehl’s Swing Street Big Band” will be held Saturday, Feb. 7 from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. at Pewee Valley Presbyterian Church Gathering Hall, 119 Central Ave.

    The event includes dinner, dance, door prizes and a silent auction. Cost is $25 per person, please wear festive attire, no jeans. Advanced reservations requested. Checks payable to: PVPC Youth Group (memo – Valentine’s).

  • Celebrating Griffith’s birthday

    Famed movie maker D.W. Griffith will turn 140 years old on January 22. To honor this native Oldham Countian, the Oldham County History Center will be showing D.W. Griffith movies and have free cupcakes at the Peyton Samuel Head Family Museum on Saturday, Jan. 24 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

  • History Center will feature locals

    The Oldham County History Center has decided to set aside every 4th Saturday of the month to honor influential Oldham Countians. There will be special activities for kids in the Peyton Samuel Head Family Museum on these days. The year-long series will begin with D.W. Griffith Day on Saturday. This day is also a celebration honoring Griffith’s birthday, January 22, 1875. Come in and enjoy a birthday cupcake while watching some of Griffith’s black and white movies. Also on display will be Griffith memorabilia.
