YMCA buys indoor arena, land

After leasing a nearby indoor arena for the last 10 years, the Oldham County YMCA in Buckner has purchased the building and the property it sits on for $1.3 million.

Peggy Kilgore, the executive director of the Oldham County YMCA, said it just made sense to purchase a building next to its main facility that is heavily used for YMCA programs anyway.

And with the building needing some renovations, it made sense to own the facility before making those renovations, she said.

“We want to put a lot of money into it and we didn’t want to do that for something we didn’t own,” she said.

So far, the YMCA has installed a new field in the indoor arena and renovated bathrooms. Other renovations will come as funds become available, Kilgore said.

Before those improvements, hardly anything had been changed since the 1990s, she said.

The purchase won’t impact any programs currently at the indoor arena, Kilgore said, and any changes will be for the better.

“Business remains the same,” she said.
