After the death of King David in 961 BC, the nation of Israel struggled economically, militarily, politically and religiously. The people longed for the glory days to return. God set in their hearts the expectation of a Messiah, a leader who would again lead them to the glory of God. From the beginning of this expectation the people prayed for a great political Messiah, like David, to come and lead them.
