This is it, your chance for a big break. Well, a small to medium size break anyway.
It’s a way for you to display your photojournalistic talent, while also giving us a glimpse into your lives.
Every week we bring news and photos of life in Oldham County throughout our paper and mind-blowing incredible insight on this very page. But next week — May 5-11 — we are branching out to photograph some of the things we don’t always have a chance to cover. I and others will spend the week documenting life in Oldham County through the lens of a camera. We will be taking photos of you at work, at play, at worship. We will record the beautiful rolling hills and farmland — all in an attempt to produce a time capsule or snapshot if you will of life in Oldham County in the year 2008.
This is where you come in.
We will document snippets of lives of a wide variety of people, but we don’t have the specific access any of you do. We won’t be able to glimpse into every household and every life — partially because that would be a little creepy, but also because it would be impossible.
Instead, I am asking that you take the best photos you ever have during this week and send them to me to be published in our paper. Your talent will be on display as this edition will go to every mailbox in the county. Who knows, maybe in 100 years people will take a pause from zipping around in their flying cars (weren’t we already supposed to have those by now?) to look back to this edition to get an idea of what life was like in 2008, if only to laugh at our goofy haircuts and clothing styles.
When I first became involved in the Arts Association of Oldham County, I was blown away by the artistic talent present in this county.
I trust I will also be blown away by these entries as well. Go ahead, send me your best pictures of the happenings of your life during this week. I want you to show me your perspective on this place we call home. I’m looking specifically for pictures that capture the spirit of the place, whether that be pictures of your family playing at home or of your friends at Bible study or of your co-workers hard at work while you play around with your camera. This week includes Mother’s Day. Go ahead and send me some unposed pictures of your family celebration. I am looking for pictures that give me a taste of the personality of the people in this community, but also of the place itself — the train, the river, horse farms, Yew Dell Gardens. Show me what matters to you.
I am not interested in posed photos with friends arms around each other facing the camera, although nice, up-close shots of faces are encouraged.
You can send your photographs to me at jfoster@oldhamera.com or come by our office at 204 S. First St., La Grange to drop off CDs or prints. Digital format is preferred, but we can also scan prints. The deadline for submissions is noon, May 13.
I will edit through and pick out the very best for inclusion in this special edition.
I feel like this is a little bit of a pep talk, so I’ll end it likewise.
Batteries charged, memory cards loaded, lens caps off. Go team!
