A man who fired shots from his vehicle and led police from La Grange to Crestwood in an attempt to avoid a traffic stop is now in custody after a standoff on the lawn of a driving range.
The suspect allegedly left a popular swimming hole in La Grange on Thursday when a La Grange Police officer attempted to stop him for possible DUI about 4:40 p.m. at the intersection of South First Street and Yager Avenue.
During a pursuit, the main fired four rounds from a handgun. He left La Grange and traveled Commerce Parkway to Buckner and then Ky. 146 toward Crestwood as officers from La Grange Police, Oldham County Police and the Oldham County Sheriff's Office followed.
He is believed to be a convicted felon carrying a stolen handgun. Police have not released his name.
Nine minutes into the pursuit, the suspect took his vehicle off-road onto the lawn of Golden Tee Driving Range in the 6000 block of Ky. 146.
When the man stepped out of his vehicle, he threatened to take his own life.
OCPD spokesperson Michael Rittenhouse said after a 46-minute standoff, police subdued the man with a Taser and took him into custody. EMS crews transported the man to University Hospital in Louisville where he will undergo a mental evaluation.
No officers, pedestrians or bystanders were injured during the incident.
The standoff promoted a lock down for at least one nearby elementary school.
While classes for Oldham County students aren't scheduled to begin until Aug. 10, hundreds of elementary students participate in summer care programs offered by Oldham elementary schools.
