GOSHEN – It was a postseason atmosphere a week early at the North Oldham Mustang Wrestling invitational Saturday.
With top ranked Trinity in attendance along with No. 7 Seneca, No. 10 South Oldham, No. 14 Oldham County and No. 15 North Oldham, the tournament was a strong final prep for the Saturday’s regional meet.
Trinity took team honors followed by Seneca, OCHS and NOHS.
North Oldham’s Dan Thomson took the 140 pound title and was named the tourney’s MVP.
Other highlights for the Mustangs were heavyweight Greg Billows taking third along with Jeff Thomson winning third at 160 pounds. Zach Richardson was third at 125.
Oldham County featured a champion in Ichiro Chiba at 215 pounds while South Oldham was led by Brandon Whitehouse in second place at 135 pounds and Cole Proctor in third place at 145 pounds.
All three teams will head to the regional meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Hoops Sports Complex off Blankenbaker Lane in Louisville.
SOHS has won the last six titles, but is hurting this year with injuries to several key wrestlers.
“Two weeks ago I would have said we could be the regional favorite,” SOHS coach Steve Fiser said. “After the way we got hurt at the Dragon meet I am not sure if we have the horsepower right now. We are just giving up too many classes to injury. I think you have to look at either Oldham or North as the favorite.”
The top four wrestlers from each weight class will advance to the state meet the following weekend in Frankfort.
