Editor’s note: The following letters are written by students in Ryan Rembold’s class at Crestwood Elementary School. We encourage submissions from people of all ages. Send letters to: news@oldhamera.com   Cell phones for students would be used for emergencies   To the editor, My name is Taby. I’m in fifth grade at Crestwood Elementary. I am writing to you because I think we should be allowed to have cell phones at school for a couple of reasons. I have a good reason to have my cell phone out of my backpack at school. It is because I have been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and if something happens to me they can just look up my house, mom or dad’s number real fast...  My opinions to having cell phones in school: 1. If there was an emergency at school or on a field trip. Especially since I have diabetes and something happened to me, I’m sure people would be calling 911 and someone needs to inform my parents so they could just use my cell phone to look up the number.  2. We can use them for certain things only like games on them, internet, pictures and definitely emergency’s. Other students opinions: 1. If there is a school shooting, you have easy access to a phone. 2. I believe that there are many occasions in which having access to a cell phone can be very useful to many students. So I would not promote banning cell phone use in school if this situation arised.  ... I think that not having cellphones in school is unfair. I think this because if we could show that we are responsible we should have a chance with cell phones. Once again my main reason for writing to you is we should have a chance to have cellphones in school. Thank you all that are reading this for your time. I really hope you all agree with me and the other students that want this to happen.  Taby   Vigorous exercise improves students’ attention   To the editor: Hi, my name is Mason, I am a fifth-grader at Crestwood Elementary. I want to write to all you teachers, parents and principals because I want more exercise in Oldham County Schools. Young kids are not getting enough exercise because they are too busy playing their game systems. And according to the American Heart Association children five years and older should have 30 minutes a day of at least moderate physical activity — walking briskly, for example — 30 minutes of vigorous physical activity such as running or playing basketball at least three times a week. Also the American Heart Association reports many studies show that moderate to vigorous exercise improves attention, both in children and adults. Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are typically less “hyper” in class if they have regular physical exercise. Regular exercise is a safe and effective treatment for mild degrees of depression and it also seems to boost the mood of people who aren’t depressed. I know a lot of you think, “What about learning?” Well, as I wrote in the last paragraph, vigorous exercise improves attention. Because kids will run out of energy they will not be jumping out of their seats and can focus on the teacher. And this is why kids need exercise in school. Mason   To the editor: My name is EJ and I am in fifth grade. My main reason I am writing this is for more physical activities and longer periods of times. We need more fitness and longer times. Here is one reason that we need more fitness: if we don’t have enough then it could cause heart problems and we could die from heart diseases. Experts say “the worry goes beyond the childhood obesity epidemic.” That’s my point why we need more activity in school. Another reason is if your student or kid has hyperactivity then this would be good for you. If you don’t have a lot of outside or play time then your student or kid wouldn’t be so hyper. You would have more play time and less trouble. My last reason is middle schooler need more exercise too. Everyone needs it, if you think that it’s just for kids you’re wrong, adults need it too. But my point is that mostly kids need it and if you don’t think that your kid needs it, think about the other kids that do. These are some reasons that we need more activity for middle school and elementary. Most of us want this for health reasons. Think of the ones that don’t have enough exercise.By the way, thank you for your time. EJ   Dressing for school is a form of self expression   To the editor: Do dress codes and school-uniform policies decrease school violence and increase  performance?  Some people believe that requiring students in school settings to conform to a dress code improves student behavior, reduces differences among socioeconomic levels and enhances students’ self-confidence. And some people believe that students should be able to wear what they want to in school. And I am one of those people who believe that we should wear what we want to school. Some kids express themselves by the way they dress. And some people can’t do that because of dress codes in schools. If we did not have all of the rules about dress codes then kids could express  themselves. The reason I wrote this letter is because I don’t agree with dress codes in schools. And kids express themselves by the way they dress and some kids can’t do that because of dress codes in schools.  Richard    Buy it or bring it – a healthy lunch is best for students   To the editor: Hi my name is Ashlee. I am a fifth grade student at Crestwood Elementary. I am writing to you because I think we should have better tasting school food. So all you cafeteria ladies and all you principals and parents please read this: Hey all you boys and girls, don’t you want better tasting food at your school? Well, I know my school does. I also think we should have healthier food choices like bananas, apples, strawberries, any berries, oranges, kiwi, pineapple, etc. Also, we need better tasting lunch, for instance my school’s spaghetti, it almost made me throw up. My teacher does not want us to get sick and be out of school. My teacher Mr. Remold likes all of his students there in the classroom and not out sick. Even students that bring their lunch might not have a healthy lunch. All you parents might think that you are packing your kids a healthy lunch but you probably are not. Some of the fruit has sugar in them and do you ever think about the sugar you pack your kids in their lunch. Even in your kids drinks that you pack them they could have sugar in them. All this sugar is bad for your kid’s health and for yours too. Some of my school’s food is OK and some of it is so bad. All I have heard is bad things about our school’s food and one or two good things. All my friends say they don’t like our school food. One of my friends got sick over our school’s food. So if you want to come and eat with your kid or kids you might want to bring your own lunch. I think my school should have better school food. If we did have healthier and better tasting food, first of all we’d like the food better and our bodies would be healthier. Our school should have health food and you should have healthy packed lunches. Ashlee   Recess is a chance to release energy To the editor: Did you know that middle school does not have recess? Did you know that it is really bad for kids to not have recess? I’m trying to make kids healthier because a lot of kids are just staying inside and will get fat from no exercise. The kids will probably have lots of homework so when they get home they will have to do their homework so they don’t get in trouble with the teacher. If they try to stay in shape and they don’t do their homework then they will get in trouble with the teacher. Did you know that recess can help people get better grades by just having recess for like 20 minutes a day. Isn’t that amazing how just 20 minutes a day could help someone that much. Here’s thing that you could do to keep people active. Your school should make a time for sixth grade, seventh grade and eighth grade. See you could have a time for everyone to have fun and still learn. Some schools are taking away recess from kids, but that may hurt them more than help. Recess helps students focus, and can improve your school’s reputation. Also, students with recess have better social skills. Recess should be a part of the curriculum of HKMS, If it helps your reputation why don’t you get it, I mean don’t you want more kids to come to your school? Now do you want to have recess in your school if you could get more kids to come to your school. You kids out there that are reading this, don’t you want to have recess because it will help your grades? I know that you’re worrying about bulling. All you have to do is just keep a teacher at all times outside to keep everyone safe. I thank you for your time with me teaching you about recess and how it can help you. Thomas   A healthy school lunch is best for students    To the editor: Hi my name is Zack. I feel that kids should have better food in school for their health and for kids to enjoy their food in school. I am writing this to those people who do not like school food because of that reason. Lots of other kids think the same thing. Lots of kids pack their lunch in the morning because they do not like school food. And I do not like packing up every morning either. Kids are not the only people who do not like school food. Parents think school food is unhealthy. They have their own web site. They have paragraph after paragraph on their child’s health – (blog.betterschoolfood.org). Moms of toddlers are worried about their food right now. Think what they are in for, in elementary school. (health.kaboose.com). I think that means that they care about their child’s health. Don’t you? Some people think school food is good. But what about their health. And it will make kids not want to eat healthy at home. Those parents I was talking about also said that their kids do not eat healthy at their house any more because of the school food.  Like I said, the main reason I am writing this is because I think kids should have better food at school. Thank you for your time. Have a great day! Zachary
