BUCKNER – There was no relaxing for the South Oldham Dragons as they took care of business early in a 4-0 district soccer tourney win over Shelby County Tuesday. The Dragons had beaten the Rockets 8-1 in the regular season, but showed no signs of looking ahead to the district finals.“That was one of our goals tonight,” SOHS coach Denis Beall said. “We wanted to come out and get up early and we did that.”Doug Ginthum got the Dragons on the board just seven minutes into the game with a shot in front of the goal.Shelby County suffered a big blow with 16 minutes into the half when they lost their starting goalie to a foot injury. The Dragons made it 2-0 with 14 minutes left in the first half when T.J. Marchese was in the right place at the right time.SOHS’ Jeff Arsenault launched a bomb from 30 yards out on the left side that rocketed off the top bar right down to the turf where Marchese was able to punch the ball in uncontested.“The biggest thing I was pleased with was we got a lot of shots early,” Beall said. “It was a pretty solid game.”While the Dragons’ offense kept pounding away at the Rockets, the defense allowed Shelby County very few shots on goal or much action in their half of the field.“We didn’t give them many opportunities,” Beall said. The Dragons put in two more goals in the second half. The first came with 28:57 left when Matt Faller hit a quick shot right in front of the Shelby County goal for a 3-0 lead. The final goal came with 12:55 left on a Cullen Hall shot.“We had a little bit of worry about this game after the way things went the last time we played them,” Beall said. “The guys did a nice job of stepping up and being ready to go.”
