The 2013-14 Dragons embraced the motto of “New Team, Same Dream.”
That dream came true in March when South Oldham reeled off three dramatic wins to claim a second straight Region 8 Tournament.
Coach Steve Simpson’s South team lost just three regular season games and won the inaugural John Fendley Classic at home over Christmas break.
The Dragons tripped up in the district title game, losing 74-67 to rival Oldham County.
That loss refocused South. Senior Drew Bullock hit seven 3-pointers and scored 25 points in the region tournament opener to lead the Dragons to a narrow 84-77 win against Owen County.
Senior Kyle Young dropped 30 points in the region semifinals against Collins and South withstood late Titan rallies to win 63-62 in overtime.
Then in the region championship game, senior Jonathan Blair rebounded his missed free throw in the final seconds and scored a layup to clinch the Dragons’ 50-47 overtime win against Simon Kenton.
South went on to the state tournament in Lexington, where they fell by double-digits in the first round to Hopkinsville for the second straight year.
But the senior-heavy group cemented its status as just the second in school history to win a region crown.
“We battled our hearts out to the very end,” Bullock said after the season-ending loss to Hoptown. “You can’t really ask for more.”
