CRESTWOOD – It came down to the tying run on third and winning run on first before the South Oldham Little League 10-year-old all-stars finally fell in the state championship game.
South fought to the East Daviess County all-stars out of Owensboro 5-4 in the title game in Richmond that took two days to play due to rain delays.
“We just couldn’t get that last run across,” South coach Bill Moriarty said. “The funny part is if we went by scores from the first or second day, we won the second day. We got down 4-1 the first day, then outscored them 3-1 the second day.”
The loss capped a strong and somewhat surprsing run for the South Oldham stars who entered the district tournament as a No. 4 seed of four teams and won the title.
South Oldham beat No. 1 seed North Oldham in the first round and followed that with a come-from-behind last inning win over No. 2 seed Valley Sports in the district finals.
“Our district is really tough,” Moriarty said. “The two games we had to win to get to the state tournament were hard.”
South advanced to the state finals with a win over Russell-Flatwoods.
Moriarty cited the team’s defense as a strong point and key to their success.
“They always hung in there,” Moriarty said. “They are a pretty tough bunch of guys. They really pulled together at the end and never gave up in any situation.”
Team members were Aaron Gohlinghorst, Devin Bishop, Will Moriarty, Zack Wheeler, Tanner Johnson, Mason Dale, Brendon Daunhauer, Michael Higgins, Stephen Mitchell, Braydon Sisson, Mitchell Stone and Jacob Schultz. Moriarty was assisted by Jeff Johnson.
