This year, the entire South Oldham Middle School community read the book, “Rules” by Cynthia Lord. Literary Coach Kathy House and Reading Specialist Becky Goetzinger said the purpose of the activity was to build the sense of school community, encourage parent involvement in classroom activities and foster a love of reading.

The theme of “Rules” is friendship, acceptance, diversity and honesty – all of which House said plays important roles in building school community. Students and staff received a reading schedule for the book and families received discussion questions for home. Each morning students answered a trivia question.

The school also participated in a service project, collecting books, games and puzzles for Seven Counties Service Inc. They collected eight boxes of donations for Seven Counties to use in waiting rooms or distribute through other programs. The school hopes to make the One School, One Book an annual event.
