When the South Oldham Dragons were matched against the Collins Titans in the second round of the boy’s soccer 8th Region tournament, they knew it would be a tough game.
A thrilling 1-0 victory pushed South into the regional final.
It didn’t take long for the Dragons to set the tone with an early goal by defender Davis Ferriell six minutes into the game.
Rocketing the ball off his foot from a cross gave the Dragons early the early momentum they needed to stay one step ahead of the Titans. From there, they controlled the first half, creating plenty of chances and corners but were unable to score.
The second half however, was dominated by Collins.
With almost all the possession of the second half and many scoring opportunities, it came down to one final chance with about one minute left but goalie Griffen Smith was up for the task, keeping the clean sheet in tact.
South Oldham now advances to the 8th Region final against rival Oldham County. The Dragons and Colonels have met three times this year, most recently in the district final where the Dragons won in penalty kicks to take home the trophy.
The game scheduled to take place after press time but check oldhamera.com for continuing coverage of the 8th Region tournament.
