The crowd goes crazy, the lights are on and the stage could not be any bigger for the South Oldham Dragons after defeating the Oldham County Colonels in penalties Wednesday night for the boys’ soccer district title.
The game was a struggle from the start for both teams with little possession, bad passes and missed opportunities on both ends of the field. It took 78 minutes before the first goal as senior Trent Howard put the Dragons ahead 1-0. The game looked over and the South student section was ready to storm the field and celebrate with the team but with five seconds left in the game, junior goalie Dean Morgan came up into the box on a free kick and tied the game with a header.
The crowd was stunned and so were the players. The most important game of the season was headed for overtime.
After two scoreless, five minute overtimes, the teams were set for a penalty kick showdown. South scored four penalties in a row while Oldham County missed two to bring the final score to 1-1 (4-2) in favor of the Dragons.
Both teams will be moving on into the regional tournament this upcoming week and will have high expectations.
