LOUISVILLE - The South Oldham girls’ cross country team showed they are still a force to be reckoned with while the boys took a big step into the spotlight Saturday as the two teams swept the regional cross country titles.
The Dragons, ranked No. 3 in the state, edged No. 2 and defending state champion North Oldham 42-51 to take the title.
ÒThatÕs always been the way we have run,Ó SOHS senior Jason Berry said. ÒWe start off nice and easy and then come on strong at the end. I think we have a better team at this time then we had at the same time last year.Ó
Berry led the Dragons with a second place finish behind CentralÕs Risik Lado who posted a time of 16:52 compared to Berry at 16:57.
SOHS took the title by placing four runners in the top 10 with Caleb Chappell in fifth, Austin Pfeifer in seventh and Jeff Law 10th.
ÒWe run so much better as a group this year,Ó Berry said. ÒWe have a really good front pack.Ó
NOHS was led by Justin Roenigk in third and Colin Grandon in ninth. Both teams will battle with top-ranked Covington Catholic for the state title.
The Lady Dragons, the defending state champions, dominated the region with 26 points, well ahead of second place Christian Academy with 65 points.
SOHS placed its top five runners in the first 11 to dominate the race. The Lady Dragons were led by Kami Orrender in second followed by Grace Whitworth in third and Jessie Murner in fifth. Hannah Ellis was seventh and Lauren Moore was 11th.
ÒWe have some new people and we run closer together,Ó Murner, the defending individual state champion, said. ÒNow our top five are really together and it makes us more competitive.Ó
As the defending state champion, the Lady Dragons know they have plenty of teams out there gunning for them as they enter the state meet ranked No. 1 in the state.
ÒWeÕre confident we can do it again but we know itÕs not going to be easy,Ó Murner said.
The girlsÕ 2A race will start at 11:30 a.m. with the boys at 12:15 p.m. at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

OCHS girls qualify
The Oldham County Lady Colonels are headed to the state meet after taking third place.
The Lady Colonels scored 64 points to trail champion Assumption at 46 and defending state champion Sacred Heart with 54 points.
Senior Claire Grogan led the Lady Colonels with a fourth place finish followed by her younger sister Margaret in eighth place.
The OCHS boys ran fourth in the region with 71 points. Trinity took the title easily with 28 points.
OCHSÕ Luke Weishaar led OCHS in fifth place while Matthew Fairfield came right behind in eighth. Both qualified for the state meet as did Ryan Riopell and Truman Simpson who finished in the top 20.
The girlsÕ 3A race will start at 1:30 p.m. with the boys going off at 2:15 p.m. Saturday at the Horse Park.
