New starting,

dismissal times

Start and ending times for students are changing this year as a result of streamlining bus routes.

This results in slightly longer bus rides for some students and the need to have more time between elementary and middle/high school start and ending times.

However, these cost-saving measures allowed the district to retain more than 10 teachers who otherwise would have lost their jobs and protected important programs that have a clear impact on student learning.

  • Preschool: 7:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. or 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Elementary schools: 7:45 a.m. to 2:20 p.m.
  • Middle schools: 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. (Oldham County Middle School dismissal 3:40 p.m.)
  • High schools: 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. (BAHS 8:30 a.m. to 3:05 p.m.)

Early dismissal

The district will continue with six early release days throughout the year. These days allow for teachers to meet in professional learning communities to review student work and plan lessons collaboratively, while still counting as a mandatory day under state guidelines. Essentially, these early release days are a two-for-one and are more cost efficient then having an entire day off school for students.

If we had a full professional day for teachers and students stayed home, they would have to make up that contact day. That would make the school year longer and there would be no transportation savings because we would have to transport the students on another day.

  • Elementary schools: 12:20 p.m.
  • Middle schools: 1:45 p.m. (OCMS at 1:40 p.m.)
  • High schools: 1:45 p.m. (BAHS at 1:05 p.m.)

Information on bus transportation for the 2013-14 school year will be available after Aug. 1. For information on transportation, visit this page or call 222-9337.

Meal prices

Breakfast prices will remain the same this year. Lunch prices will increase 15 cents as part of the federal Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.

  • Breakfast: $1.10 for all grades
  • Lunch: elementary, $2
  • Lunch: middle, high, $2.25
  • Lunch, grill line: middle and high, $2.65

Applications for free and reduced lunch can be filled out and submitted online.

School fees

Due to new state policies regulating school finances, parents may need to write two or more separate checks to cover student fees at the beginning of the school year.

If a parent paid student fees for the 2013-14 school year prior to July 1, this change does not apply.

We are nearing the end of the redistricting process for the 2014-15 school year.

The third and final round of public forums will start at 6 p.m. Aug. 19 at North Oldham Hihg School; Aug. 21, South Oldham High School; and Aug. 22, Oldham County High School.

Please arrive for the beginning of the session, as there will be a presentation about the proposed attendance boundaries to start the meeting. Attendees will then gather in small, facilitated groups to provide pros and cons of each proposal.

Draft proposals and other information can be found online at: oldham.kyschools.us/redistricting. Currently, the first round of draft proposals are available online. The revised proposals, which will be discussed at the August forums, will be posted online in advance.

The board of education will be presented with one or two final proposals at the board meeting Sept. 23. Board members will provide feedback and, if necessary, slight changes will be made. The board will then vote on the attendance boundaries at the Nov. 25 board meeting.

All students will know of their 2014-15 school assignment by January 2014.

We greatly appreciate all the feedback and insight parents and community members provided in the first two rounds of forums and we look forward to hearing their input in August.

We believe our redistricting process has encouraged transparent, two-way communication; we hope parents and the community feel the same way.
