School board sets calendar, breaks for upcoming school year

The calendar for the upcoming school year has been officially set after receiving approval from the Oldham County Board of Education.

The board approved the calendar at its monthly meeting in February, setting the first day of school as Aug. 20. The final day of school is tentatively set for June 3, 2015.

The school year’s Spring Break is April 6 – 10, 2015, but for the first time in many years doesn’t line up with Jefferson County Public School’s break.

Oldham County Schools officials blamed that on JCPS, who veered off normal course, they said. And despite the difference, Superintendent Will Wells said the district didn’t want to change the date in the proposal to the board because it had been set months ago.

“We’re sensitive to that issue, but we have set this a year in advance,” Wells said. “But in sensitivity to families who have planned vacations (for the 2014-2015 school year) we can’t change that.”

The board approved the calendar unanimously.

They also set initial breaks for the 2015-2016 school year, but did not set spring break dates for that year to avoid a similiar situation where OCS and JCPS spring break dates do not match up.
