Consumers who have purchased classified ads in newspapers could be targeted by scam artists and should not give out personal information over the phone.
Attorney General Jack Conway said the state’s consumer protection hotline has received complaints that someone claiming to be from a newspaper is contacting advertisers asking for credit card and Social Security numbers.
Newspapers across the Commonwealth are asking advertisers not to respond to these calls and not to give out personal information over the telephone.
The Consumer Protection Division of the Office of the Attorney General is investigating the reports. For information, call the Consumer Protection Hotline at (888) 432-9257.
