GOSHEN – Powered by several local runners, the Derby City Athletic Club brought home national recognition recently.
Derby City, whose youth team includes many of the Louisville area’s best elementary, middle, and high school runners, traveled to Decatur, Alabama to take on some of nation’s top running programs at the 2008 AAU National Cross Country Championship.
Derby City fielded teams in ten of the age classifications and wound up with seven top-three team finishes – including National Championships in both the youth boys division and the young women’s division.
Three Oldham County runners placed in the top 10 of their respective age divisions at the AAU national championship.
Luke Weishaar, a freshman at Oldham County High School, took second place for 14 year-old boys.
Trenton Fryman, who runs for Goshen Elementary, finished eighth in the 10-year-old boys group, and Caitlin Beyea of North Oldham High School placed ninth for 14-year-old girls.
Weishaar was an integral part of the youth boys national championship team.
Beyea, along with NOHS’ Shelby Adams, was a member of the national runner-up youth girls team.
Goshen’s Kaeley Arterburn, Nicole Grendi and Shelby McWilliams were part of the national runner-up 9-10 year-old bantam girls team.
In the primary girls’ division, eight-years-old and younger, the Derby City team including Goshen’s Renee Grendi and Avery Fryman tied for second.
They wound up taking third place after a tiebreaker had to be used to decide the final outcome.
