Prospect resident dies in Interstate 71 crash

A two-vehicle accident on Interstate 71 last Thursday has claimed the life of a Prospect resident.

Zarifa Malawi, 77, was pronounced dead late Thursday night, after the Chrysler minivan she was a passenger in apparently rear-ended a tractor trailer around mile marker 14 on I-71 southbound.

The driver of the tractor trailer, Joshua Roth, 28, of Sidney, Ohio, was uninjured in the accident.

Six other people in the minivan were involved in the accident and four were treated for injuries. Those six include Gus Malawi, 51, and the driver of the vehicle, Omar Marhaba, 18, Rana Malawi, 48, Jumana Alameddine, 58, Lina Marhaba, 45, and an unnamed 13-year-old girl.

All passengers in the minivan are Prospect residents.

According to a release, Oldham County Police don’t expect criminal charges to be filed as a result of the accident and the investigation into it is ongoing.
