Louisville pair finds love on the range

By Tracy Harris

Bullets weren’t the only thing in the air at Open Range Saturday — love was, too.

Stefan Harp and his girlfriend, Lysa Shepard, arrived at the Crestwood gun range for what Lysa thought would be a normal day of shooting.

She recalls being impressed that Harp thought to make a lane reservation in advance.

The couple, who met four years ago as students at the University of Louisville, has visited Open Range several times and enjoys the facility despite the drive from their Louisville home. Shooting is a hobby Stefan and Lysa enjoy doing together, Lysa said.

While setting up their equipment, Lysa noticed there was no target at the end of their lane.

Stefan told her to push a button to make the target come down from the ceiling — it dropped, came toward the couple on its overhead track and stopped in front of Lysa. This target came with something extra, though — Stefan’s proposal. Open Range staff had taped, “Lysa, will you marry me?” to the target.

She read it and turned around to find Stefan on one knee — she said yes.

Lysa said they had been ring shopping, so she knew a proposal was coming.

“But I definitely wasn’t expecting that,” she said. “I couldn’t shoot after that.”
