Oldham County Schools will host four safety forums this week in response to last week's tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut, where 20 students and six adults were killed during a shooting rampage.

The forums will provide an opportunity for parents and residents to ask questions and learn more about what the district does to ensure student safety.

"As a parent of young children myself, I feel the same feelings of alarm and concern that you feel when you hear of tragedies like what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut on Friday," Superintendent Will Wells wrote in a letter to parents. "As educators, we feel a strong sense of responsibility to do everything we can to provide students a safe school experience while at school and traveling there and back."

Forums will be held at several locations.

  • Dec. 17, 5 p.m., Oldham County High
  • Dec. 18, 9:30 a.m., North Oldham High
  • Dec. 18, 1:30 p.m., East Oldham Middle
  • Dec. 18, 6 p.m., South Oldham High

Each school has a designated Safe Schools Coordinator who maintains the individual school's safety plans.

Wells said meetings are scheduled with the district's mental health consultants, school resource officers, and other law enforcement officials to review plans and procedures.

Wells said district staff are prepared to talk to students who are upset by what they might have seen or heard about the tragic event.

"One of the best things we as adults can do for our children is to provide them their normal routine and assure them that they are safe at our schools and in our community," he said.

In a letter sent to parents, Wells included information from the National Association of School Psychologists to help parents and other adults discuss the tragedy with children.

Parents who have additional questions are asked to contact their child's principal or call Assistant Superintendent Dan Orman at 241-3500.
