Oldham elementary schools honored for lunch programs

School lunches aren’t just chicken nuggets and pizza any more — and Oldham elementary schools have the award to prove it.

All 10 elementary schools achieved the bronze level award through the HealthierUS School Challenge, a voluntary national certification.

Last year First Lady Michelle Obama introduced Let’s Move!, a campaign to promote healthier children, and the HUSSC became part of the program. HUSSC actually began in 2004, but under the Let’s Move! program, schools can now earn monetary awards.

The HUSSC establishes four award levels, bronze, silver, gold and gold award of distinction.

Oldham nutritional staff have worked for several years to earn the bronze award.

“I know in a year or so they’ll be back for the silver or gold level,” said Assistant Superintendent Rick McHargue at November’s Board of Education meeting.

McHargue and Superintendent Paul Upchurch presented a plaque to each elementary school’s principal and school nutrition representative.

Each school received a $500 monetary incentive which will be used to create nutrition reference libraries.
