After facing temperamental weather and plenty of high expectations to start the season, the Oldham County softball team picked up its first big win of the season March 27, upending No. 3 ranked Ballard 5-1.
That came in large part to an offensive explosion in the game’s sixth inning as a two-out push by the Lady Colonels ended in a four-run swing
Clinging to a 1-0 lead, Oldham County started the rally with a walk by Ryanne Shelton. After consecutive hits by Sarah Lopesilvero and K.K. Rigdon scored two more, catcher Rebecca Wishnevski broke the game open on a towering two-run shot that put the game away.
Ballard tried to rally in the last half inning but scored only one run before a pop fly ended the Lady Bruins’ day.
Prior to the sixth inning outburst, Oldham County relied largely on pitcher Jessica Leanhart, who scattered three hits with six strikeouts and three walks on the day.
