Oldham County’s Lady Colonels defeated Atherton Dec. 28, moving to 6-5 on the season. The win moved them into the finals of Oldham County’s Holiday Invitational, where they faced Fairdale High School in a game that was played after press time.
Oldham County came out of the gates firing, taking control of the game with their defense and fast break offense to open up 14-2 run to start the first quarter.
Atherton attempted to slow down the Lady Colonels with a time out but Oldham County finished the quarter leading 16-6.
Oldham County’s defense continued to cause problems in the second quarter, creating turnovers almost every-other Atherton possession. Those led to fast-break points for the Colonels, including 8 straight points for Jayla Davis to end the half with the Lady Colonels holding a commanding 41-16 lead.
Atherton’s defense stepped up in the second half, creating havoc for Oldham County, but by then it was too late — Oldham County 75-41.
“It was a team game,” coach Jace Bryant said afterwards. “The points off of turnovers were huge, and once again our bench played great.”
