It wasn't pretty win but Oldham County coach Jace Bryant will certainly take it as his Lady Colonels advanced out of the first round of the 29th district tournament Tuesday night with a 59-53 victory over Trimble County.
Center Jenna Kirk was a big reason for that , providing a big boost for the Lady Colonels after Trimble County game-planned to limit Ashley McMurtrey with a box and 1, scoring 11 of the first 16 points.
McMurtrey managed to find her way into the scoring column in the second quarter though, exploding for seven points to extend Oldham Cxounty's lead to 31-24 at the half.
But Trimble County had an answer in the third, cutting the deficit to 47-46 after a 23-16 run.
At that point, the Lady Raiders had the chance to take the lead but a combination of offensive miscues and McMurtrey kept them at bay. After scoring to push the lead to three at 49-46, McMurtrey added two more on a stolen inbounds pass, before nailing a 3-pointer to put the game out of reach. Trimble County wouldn't get any closer but McMurtrey wasn't done, adding three more points to close the game.
McMurtrey scored 22 points to lead Oldham County, while Kirk added 15 in relief.
With the win, the Lady Colonels advance to the finals Friday, where they'll meet rival South Oldham to decide the district. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
