Story by Randy Heite
The Oldham County Boys’ Basketball team defeated Trimble County on Dec. 14 81-71.
The Colonels looked to rebound after their loss on Dec. 11 loss to second ranked Bullitt East, 50-43. Oldham County took the lead early through fast-breaks, jumping out to a 7-2 lead. With the help of a Connor Hicks jumper and Austin Wills back-to-back 3-pointers, they would stretch it to 15-8. Oldham County would end the first quarter with a 22-14 lead.
Oldham County wasn’t able to hit any shots in the second quarter while Trimble County dominated behind the arc. Trimble would take lead going into half time, 30-29. Hicks led Oldham County with 7 points at the half.
In the third quarter, Oldham County would come back to life on offense, scoring 5 unanswered points in the first minute. The Colonels would lose the lead again, but would gain it right back when Anthony Johnson hit a short jumper to give them a 42-40 lead late in the quarter. Oldham County would go into the final frame with a 52-47 lead.
OC would dominate the final period, led by Jacob Kopp scoring 12 of his 20 points, never leading by less than 5 points in the final eight minutes. In the end, Oldham County would pull out a 10 point victory, 81-71.
Colonels' coach Jason Holland said nothing was working for his team despite the win.
"We didn’t execute anything we worked on and we were flat," he said, "They played Louisville Moore and Bullitt East, two teams ranked in the top 15, and then they saw South beat Trimble by 50, so they thought they could come out and play flat. It was a letdown game for us.”
Oldham County has two tournaments over the next couple of weeks, including the Best in Hoops tournament, which Oldham County hosts. The Colonels have the possibility of facing multiple top 20 teams. According to Holland, the Colonels must get back on track for their tournament games.
Oldham will play Bracken Countyat 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the first round. This is the Colonels first ever matchup with the Polar Bears.
