President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster for Kentucky – including Oldham County – in the wake of the recent ice storm that left thousands without power and took down trees and power lines.
According to a press release from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, because of the president’s declaration, aid is now available for the state to supplement recovery efforts.
FEMA will supply – as needed and warranted – payment of at least 75 percent of costs of removing debris from public areas to the state or local governments. They will pay at least 75 percent of the cost for emergency measures taken to save lives and protect property, and for hazard mitigation projects – those that state or local governments may have used “to prevent or reduce long-term risk to life and property” from the disaster.
According to the release, “FEMA will provide direct federal assistance through a mission assignment to another federal agency – upon request of the state – when the state and local government certify they lack the capability to perform or contract for the requested work.”
