OCMS Lady Colonels varsity volleyball finished the Mid-Bluegrass Conference regular season undefeated and won the tourney title for the second year in a row.
The team was led by captains and second-year varsity members Taylor Davis and Kayla Peterworth who helped anchor an athletic and versatile group of young ladies. Kailey Smith, Aiyana Bacot, Adrienne Hoffman and Shelby Yahl provided a formidable front court presence, while Taylor Alvey, Sammy Key, Ryen Lashley, Kylie Abernathy and Elizabeth Hill frustrated opposing offenses with their nothing-falls defense.
The MBC Tournament began on Oct. 4 at OCMS. In first round play, East Oldham and South Oldham defeated Shelby-West and Shelby-East, setting up an all-Oldham semi-finals. There, in straight sets No. 1 seeded OCMS defeated EOMS and No. 2 seeded North Oldham beat SOMS, setting up a rematch of last year’s varsity championship.
The championship match featured a close contest in the first set, with OCMS winning 25-19. During the second game OCMS got out to an early lead and never looked back, claiming a 25-16 victory. Following the game, OCMS’ Davis, Peterworth and Alvey were named to the MBC All-Tournament team for their leadership, effort and solid play during the tournament.
The OCMS varsity team finished with an overall record of 24-3.
Coach Ken Miller attributed this team’s success to their hard work and dedication to the sport, to their parents’ outstanding support, and to the OCMS coaching staff. This was the first team to have been coached by all three coaches at OCMS: Miller, JV Coach Christian Miller, and 6th Grade Coach Paul Puckett.
That success carried through as the OCMS 6th grade defeated the 10-0 regular-season EOMS Patriots in the MBC title. 6th Grade Captain Madison Clark provided a much-needed offensive spark with numerous hits and aces.
The JV MBC Championship was a tightly-fought contest between the regular season co-champions EOMS and OCMS. EOMS won the tournament title by edging OCMS 15-13 in the third set.
Finally, the varsity champion OCMS Lady Colonels and runner-up NOMS Lady Mustangs will represent the MBC against the top two Jefferson County teams at the regional tournament. The tournament will be held at MAVA on October 15.
