OCHS teams are second in kickoff meet

BUCKNER – North Oldham’s Jeremy Rice and Oldham County’s Madison Theiss carried their strong indoor track seasons into the first outdoor meet of the year.

Both won first place medals at the Oldham County Kickoff Meet March 27.

Theiss captured first place in the girls’ triple jump with a leap of 31 feet, nine inches. Rice won the boys’ 800 -meter run with a time of 2:00.73. Both Rice and Theiss won first place medals in the indoor Mason-Dixon games in February.

NOHS’ Justin Roenigk and Fran Larson and OCHS’ Luke Weishaar also won first place medals. Roenigk took first in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:18.62 while Weishaar completed the sweep of distance events winning first in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:37.47.

Larson won a three-way tie in the high jump at 4-10, winning on scoring that height with the fewest jumps.South Oldham’s B.J. Byars and Mike Thompson both took first place medals as well.

Byars won the long jump at 19-6 while Thompson was first in the high jump at 5-8.

Fern Creek won the girls’ team title with 119 points. OCHS was second with 97 points. NOHS was fifth at 57.5 points while SOHS was sixth with 49 points.

Trinity won the boys’ team title with 108 points followed by OCHS with 83.33 points. SOHS was third with 79 points and NOHS fourth with 74.33 points.

The OCHS girls got a strong day from sisters Claire and Margaret Grogan.

Claire Grogan second in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:32.31 while Margaret Grogan was third with a time of 5:38.95.

Claire Grogan, a senior, placed third in the 3,200 at 11:50.28.

Margaret Grogan was second in the 800-meter run at 2:25.79.

In addition to her first place in the triple jump, Theiss placed third in the high jump at 4-10. She was second in the discus with a throw of 89-7.5.  

SOHS was paced by Grace Whitworth’s second place finish in the 3,200 with a time of 11:47.38. Hannah Ellis was third in the 800 with a time of 2:33.24. Katie Lawson took third in the shot put for SOHS with a throw of 27-9.

OCHS’ Amelia Orwick took third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:05.84 while Evann Dickerson was third in the long jump at 14-11.

NOHS’ Taylor Sanders was third in the 1,600 with a time of 4:42.81 and Zach Evans was third in the 300 hurdles at 43.06.

SOHS’ Thomas Catalano and Caleb Chappell were second and third respectively in the 3,200. Catalano edged Chappell 10:22.5 to 10:22.85. 

The locals dominated the 110 hurdles with OCHS’ Kyle Waugh winning first at 16.5 seconds followed by Chris Diaz of SOHS and Jason Scalf of OCHS. Waugh also took second in the 300 hurdles.

In the throwing events, OCHS’ Chris Caudill was third in the shot put with a throw of  39-7.

NOHS’ Cameron Renaud was third in the discus at 108-6.
