The 17 point victory punched the Colonel’s ticket into the district tournament final and more importantly the region tournament.

The first half was very low scoring with many momentum changes that boosted OC to an early lead. At the end of a brutal first period that ended 6-6, the Colonels and Mustangs exchanged blows which included an intense dunk by North Oldham senior Austin Zehnder and back-to-back threes by Oldham County senior Sam Gruber. The packed gym at Oldham County High School roared with excitement nonstop for the final minutes of the half as OC lead 23-11.

The second half was just as entertaining until the fourth period as OC began to run up the scoreboard on their rivals. A combination of a big block by Oldham County senior Garrett Masters and clutch free throw shooting allowed the Colonels to gain the big lead. North Oldham’s all-time leading scorer, David Levitch, was held to only one point until midway into the third quarter and finished with 13 points on 2 of 14 shooting. The defense of the Colonels showed up when they needed to most only allowing the Mustangs to 40 points, their lowest point total on the season.

For the Mustangs, their season ends short of the the regional tournament for the second year in a row, while the Colonels will face South Oldham in the district final 7:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at Oldham County to decide who will be crowned district championship. This game is a rematch of last year’s district final where Oldham beat South 58-43 and then went on to win the regional tournament and advance as far as the final four in the state tournament.
