North’s speech team has success in first tournament

The North Oldham High School Speech Team had success in Bardstown at the first tournament of the year. The team members had two chances to make finals at the tournament. 

In the first tournament of the day, the following students reached the final round of competition and have pre-qualified for the state tournament next March: Kristin Hopkins and Megan Johnson, third place in improvisational duo; Samya Monem and Ryan Seals, fourth place in duo interpretation; Josh Wiersema, fifth place in prose; Megan Johnson, fourth place in poetry; Rachel Gibson, fourth place in dramatic interpretation; Kristin Hopkins, third place in dramatic interpretation; Kathleen Newman, fifth place in humorous interpretation; and Samya Monem, champion in humorous 

interpretation.

An honorable mention went to Colin Edmundson for placing seventh in declamation and to Kelsey Carlin and Andrew Fraser for their seventh-place finish in duo interpretation. The team also placed third overall in sweepstakes points.

In the second tournament of the day, the following students reached the final round of competition and have pre-qualified for the state tournament next March: Rachel Gibson and Josh Wiersema, second place in improvisational duo; Kristin Hopkins and Megan Johnson, fourth place in improvisational duo; Josh Wiersema, fifth place in prose; Megan Johnson, third place in poetry; Kathleen Newman, fourth place in humorous interpretation; Samya Monem, champion in humorous interpretation. 

An honorable mention goes to the following students for their performances in the final round of the day: Colin Edmundson, fourth in declamation; Kelsey Carlin and Andrew Fraser, third place in duo interpretation; Samya Monem and Ryan Seals, second place in duo interpretation; Rachel Gibson, fourth place in dramatic interpretation; Kristin Hopkins, second place in dramatic interpretation; and Josh Gustafson, seventh place in prose. 

In the second tournament of the day, the NOHS Speech Team were crowned Sweepstakes Champions. 

The NOHS Debate Team won their third consecutive debate tournament. Andy Kangpan, in a 3-0 decision in the final round, took first place in varsity debate and second place in speaker points. Seth Tompkins, also in a 3-0 decision, took first place in novice debate. 

The entire team made a very strong showing with Josh Rosenberg, 3-1, Doug Bonomo, 3-1, Carsten Fletcher, 2-2, and Cade Friedland making a good showing before he had to drop out of the tournament due to illness. Both Kangpan and Tompkins were 5-0 for the day.
