North Oldham wins another county swim title

LOUISVILLE – North Oldham’s swimmers were county kings and queens of the pool again Friday night.

North achieved a combined team score of 520 at the Ralph Wright Natatorium to win its fourth straight Oldham County Cup Challenge. South Oldham came in second with a team score of 385 and Oldham County finished third with 286 points.

“It’s very exciting,” North senior swimmer Arseniy Semenov said of the school’s fourth straight title. “We got what we worked for, so I’m pretty satisfied.”

North won the men’s competition with a score of 247. South (220) was second and OC (122) was third.

Meanwhile the Lady Mustangs (273) won the women’s competition by a wide margin over South (165) and OC (164).

Semenov was the top individual scorer on the men’s side Friday, scoring 227 points. Second was Clayton Helsley (North, 226) and third was Max Houston (South, 193).

“I didn’t feel really fast today,” Semenov said, “but I tried my best.”

Semenov teamed with Helsley, Mark Scherer and August Kingsley to help North win the men’s 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:46.34.

He took home first place in the men’s 200-yard IM with a time of 2:01.46.

Later in the night Semenov, Helsley, Luc Brazeau and Danny Walker won the men’s 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:35.57.

Semenov capped off a big night by winning the men’s 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.65.

North’s Grace Oglesby (256) was the high-scoring women’s swimmer of the night, edging South’s Lydia Jackson (240) and OC’s Olivia Hoskins (239).

Oglesby helped the Lady Mustangs win the first event of the night, teaming with Emma Brazeau, Lauren Miller and Morgan Miller to win the women’s 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:54.01.

Oglesby won the women’s 50-yard freestyle in 24.93 seconds. She also took home first place honors in the 100-yard butterfly, winning with a time of 57.96 seconds.

Finally Oglesby teamed with Lauren Miller, Morgan Miller and Katie Tarvestad to win the women’s 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:48.19.

The closest race of the night was the men’s 400-yard freestyle relay. South’s team of Max Houston, Sam Houston, Avery Deshler and Nate Davis edged North’s team of Luc Brazeau, Sam Zaepfel, Yoni Smolyar and Scherer by a time of 3:30.55 to 3:30.85.

The second-closest race of the night was the women’s 500-yard freestyle, with South’s Jackson and her time of 5:10.11 edging North’s Tarvestad and her time of 5:10.46.
