Heading into the 2012-13 season, North Oldham basketball coach Chris Stobaugh knew a team would eventually succeed in stopping David Levitch.
He also knew that his team could continue playing at a high level in that situation as long as another player stepped up.
Check and check.
Though Oldham County held Levitch well below his season average on Jan. 11, the Mustangs got plenty of help from junior sharp shooter Trevor Burton to pull off an emotional 49-36 win.
Burton, the team’s second leading scorer, opened the game on a 7-point tear and never looked back, rattling home important shot after important shot.
“Trevor was fantastic,” Stobaugh said. “He got off to a great start and never looked back.”
As a whole, Stobaugh said he pleased with his team played as well.
“I was very happy with our defense,” he said. “We knew that it was going to be a possession by possession game and we knew that they were good on the offensive glass. We outrebounded them which was key to the game. And then offensively, our guys are playing with more confidence every game. Some guys really stepped up.”
In addition to a huge confidence booster, the win also moves North to 1-0 in district play and sets up a showdown with South Oldham on Jan. 29 to decide the district’s top team.
The last time the teams met, it took an extra period to decide a winner as Levitch sent the game into overtime on a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left.
The Dragons went on to win 80-75.
Levitch paced the Mustangs with 11 points and added 9 rebounds in the winning effort.
The loss, the Colonels’ fifth of the season, is the latest in a long line of question mark for the team. Despite holding wins over talented Central and Moore squads and a narrow 50-43 defeat to the state’s No. 2 team, Bullitt East, Oldham County has failed to find a rhythm in recent weeks.
The Colonels return to the court 7:30 p.m. Jan. 18 as they take on DeSales at home. North Oldham heads to Shelby County for a 7:30 p.m. game Jan. 18.
