As a parent, Nadia Miller understands wanting to support a child with some school pride, be it a t-shirt, car flag or a bleacher seat.
And she also understands that currently, Oldham County doesn’t have a great wealth of places to buy spirit stuff for Oldham County school teams.
Which is why Miller is opening Oldham County Sportswear in Crestwood on Nov. 1.
“These parents want to see something that is actually for their school,” Miller said.
With two sons, one playing baseball and another wrestling, and a girl just getting into gymnastics, Miller said she had trouble finding sportswear for her family teams, which lead her to her business idea.
“I came to live at the ballpark, at wrestling tournaments,” Miller said. “(Local sportswear) is personally what I wanted and what I saw a need for.”
Miller will have sportswear for teams ranging from preschool to high schools, she said. And she will donate five percent of sales for every school back to that school’s PTA.
The store will not feature any equipment at the opening, but may down the road, Miller said.
“Our motto is outfitting fans of all sports,” she said.
The store will be located at 7600 East Orchard Grass Blvd., behind the Marathon on Hwy 22.
Miller has been operating under that name for a while doing special orders with schools and taking online orders.
So far, Miller has worked with Kenwood Station and all three high schools, as well as private schools in Louisville.
The idea for the store came seven years ago, Miller said, when she worked at a bank. Owning a business is something that runs in Miller’s family and she wanted to put her business management degree from the University of Louisville to work.
“I decided I wanted to go out on my own,” she said.
Miller has been filling orders in her own garage since May and when demand increased, she decided to open a storefront.
At the store’s grand opening on Nov. 1, Miller said she would give customers 20 percent off their purchases, as well as sponsor giveaways and provide refreshments and snacks.
And she hopes that with a new option to get local sportswear for Oldham squads, business will continue to increase.
“We’re open to creating sportswear for any school and any county,” Miller said.
