Residents of Orchard Grass Hills encountered an ax-wielding intoxicated man just before sunrise Saturday morning.

Oldham County Police arrested David G. Mikel, 21, of Crestwood, at 6:55 a.m. Saturday on charges of wanton endangerment and assault.

Police found Mikel in the front yard of his home, 7441 W. Orchard Grass Blvd., yelling obscenities and swinging an ax as people ran from him.

Neighbors told police Mikel, who was highly intoxicated, became enraged after someone allegedly knocked on his front door.

Police said Mikel struck one person with the wood handle of the ax and caused extensive damage to property in the 7400 block of W. Orchard Grass Blvd.

He is housed in the Oldham County Jail on a $50,000 bond.

Mikel appeared in Oldham district court Monday morning, where a judge prohibited him from having contact with the alleged victims and from using alcohol.

He is scheduled to return to Oldham district court for a preliminary hearing at 12:30 p.m. May 4.
