Mustangs win regional track crown

-A A +A
By Mickey Patterson

LOUISVILLE – The individual honors didn’t count for much for the North Oldham High School boys’ track team as they won the regional title behind their depth and across the board strength in both the running and field events.
The Mustangs took the AA team title with 119 points, ahead of runner-up Louisville Central with 96. South Oldham was fourth with 70 points.
“We were really pumped about the results when they came out,” NOHS senior Jeremy Rice said. “We knew going in there were some good teams like Central, but we were confident we could win.”
Rice was NOHS’ only individual champion winning the 800-meter run title. He will enter the state meet ranked No. 4 in the state in that event.
The Mustangs had junior Zach Evans take second in three events, the 100- and 200-meter dashes and the 300-meter hurdles.
Also taking second were Colin Grandon in the 3,200-meter run and the 4x800 relay team of Grandon, Rice, Taylor Sanders and Alec Horn.
NOHS scored points in 13 events.
“We do have really good depth this year,” Rice said. “We have guys who score points in just about every event.”
NOHS, ranked No. 1 in the state, will be in contention for the team AA state title with the numbers they pushed into the meet.
“I think we can win it with a good day,” Rice said. “If everyone does what they are capable of, we should do really well.”
For SOHS, the Dragons had an individual champion in Mike Thompson in the high jump with a leap of 6-2. Thompson won the event last year.
The Dragons’ 4x800 relay team of Adam Davis, Leonard Faul, Kyle Wiedemer and Austin Pfeifer took the title edging out NOHS.
SOHS will send a strong distance contingent to the state meet paced by Pfeifer in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs and Jeff Law in the 3,200.
NOHS girls win second
NOHS narrowly missed a team sweep as the Lady Mustangs were second in the region. Central took the title with 163 points while NOHS scored 140. SOHS was fourth with 38 points.
Sophomore Brianne Brown continued to lead NOHS winning the long jump title with a leap of 16-10.
Brown was also second in the 100-meter dash and second in the 100-meter hurdles.
Brown is ranked in the top five in the state in all three events and considered a legitimate contender to win a title in each event.
The Lady Mustangs had two other regional champions with Frannie Larson winning the high jump and Natalie Newman taking the pole vault title.
Also taking second for NOHS were Jessica Lowe in the 1,600 and Lucy Gibson in the 300-meter hurdles.
Another highlight of the meet was the 4x800 relay won by SOHS with NOHS taking second.
SOHS, comprised of Jessie Murner, Kami Orrender, Hannah Ellis and Keighly Dudgeon, will be going after their third straight state title in the event.
NOHS, featuring Sarah Redel, Hannah Gray, Lowe and Ally Hall are the Lady Dragons’ main competition.
SOHS won the regional title with a time of 10:00.38, just ahead of NOHS at 10:01.64.
Orrender, Ellis and Murner were all members of the state title teams the past two seasons.
Dudgeon replaced Katie Cease as the fourth member of the team this year.
