LOUISVILLE — In the final event that would decide the county’s boys’ swimming championship, North Oldham High School sophomore Mark Scherer saw the task ahead of him.
Oldham County jumped to an early lead in the 400-yard freestyle relay behind senior Christian Taylor’s opening swim. But after diving in the water for the second leg, Scherer passed the Colonels and the Mustangs kept the lead.
Scherer’s swim gave North Oldham the win in 31:41.05, just enough to get past South Oldham to win the boys’ meet 236-226 Jan. 21 at the University of Louisville’s Ralph Wright Natatorium. OCHS had 115 points. NOHS won the girls’ title easily, with 263 points, while OCHS finished with 188 and SOHS with 149.
Scherer said he tried to stay focused during his swim.
“I just knew I had to catch the guy and get us the lead,” Scherer said. “And I felt like I swam my absolute fastest.”
The Mustangs’ final event win ended up as their only event win of the day, though NOHS claimed seven second-place finishes.
OCHS junior CJ Skinner received the top boys’ swimmer of the meet award, after winning the 50-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle.
“I was counting down the days this week because I was so excited to swim here,” he said. “This is probably my favorite meet, since it’s all Oldham County teams and you know everybody.”
NOHS freshman Asia Seidt claimed the top girls’ swimmer of the meet, after wins in the 200-yard medley relay, 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard backstroke and 400-yard freestyle relay.
Seidt said she felt like the team inspired her and vice-versa.
“Once you get so much motivation, it kinda just goes throughout everybody,” she said.
NOHS coach Kris Krohn said the closeness of the boys’ finish made him nervous, but overall, he liked the intensity from both the boys’ and girls’ teams.
“From the first race to the last race, they were ready to go,” Krohn said. “Those boys came ready to swim. You just hope they take that excitement and build off that. It just adds that piece of confidence to their mentality.”
