Math really counts

The South Oldham Middle School Math Counts Team competed in the regional competition Feb. 2 at the University of Louisville and ranked 15th out of 28 local schools. Team members are eighth-grader Taylor Bryant and seventh-graders Emily McOmber (captain), Julia Niemann and Caroline Reents. Competing as individuals were seventh-graders Shawn Effingham, Felicia Houchens and Larissa Pack and sixth-grader Nathan Dearen. Emily Karweick, a sixth-grader, participated as an unofficial competitor. There were more than 170 students participating in the competition and McOmber scored in the top 25 percent, placing 39th. She was followed by Shawn Effingham at 53rd and Larissa Pack at 65th. The Math Counts team is sponsored by Beth Johnson, a seventh-grade math and algebra teacher at SOMS. The regional and state competitions are hosted by the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers.
