The Furball honored those who care for animals in need Feb. 23. Pet’s Group United is a non-profit organization. It describes itself as the “United Way” of pet welfare groups.Involved or partnered local groups include Alley Cat Advocates, Animal Care Society, Animal Protection Association, Community Pet Relief Fund, Shamrock Foundation Greyhound Placement Inc., Metro Animal Services, Shamrock Foundation Inc. and Neuter Town Inc. Its largest fundraiser, the Furball, is an annual formal affair that brings local groups together to celebrate special animals and people who have made a difference.This year one of Crestwood’s own was recognized. Dr. Teresa Gregory was honored with the animal professional award. She has been deemed the patron Saint of spay/neuter. In 2007, she altered more than 2,000 animals. She also works with wildlife rehabilitation in addition to full-time veterinary practice at Crestwood Veterinary Hospital.Others honored include Brian Kehl of the Elizabethtown News-Enterprise for the Media Advocacy Award, Kaitlin Cheek for the Youth Service Award and “Booker” the dog for the Service Animal Award. The Trooper Community Service Award went to Michael Blowen who owns Old Friends non-profit sanctuary for retired racehorses.
