Local swimmers qualify for state meet

LOUISVILLE – Three individuals and four relay teams from the county will compete in the state high school swimming championship Friday and Saturday at the University of Louisville.

The swimmers qualified at the regional meet Saturday. Oldham County High School ‘s girls earned eighth while the North Oldham Lady Mutangs placed ninth. South Oldham took 11th.

For the boys, OCHS placed ninth, NOHS earned 11th and SOHS came in 14th.

OCHS senior Amanda Skinner heads the list of local individuals qualifying in two events.

Skinner was 13th in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:14.73. She was also 12th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:09.82.

OCHS junior Claire Grogan, who is coming back from a shoulder injury, was fifth with a time of 1:07.47.

Both Grogan and Skinner competed in last year’s state meet.

SOHS freshman Harley Jackson also qualified as an individual. She was 20th in the 500 freestyle race with a time of 5:27.84.

Skinner and Grogan teamed with freshman Quinlan Gavin and junior Annie Golemboski to help the 200 medley relay team take 13th with a 1:57.32. 

The NOHS team of Hannah Aleksevitch, Rachel O’Connor, Bekah Green and Anne Scherer also qualified as an alternate in the event with a time of 2:02.84.

That same NOHS quartet qualified in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:54.24.

The NOHS boys will send their 400 freestyle relay team of Ben Zaepfel, Ryan McMillen, Evan Buelt and Kendall Derr. They were 24th with a 3:44.23.

The state meet starts at 10 a.m. Friday and continues through Saturday evening at the U of L aquatics complex on Floyd Street.
