Use locally-made ingredient in pecan pie

To the editor,

Regarding Virginia Stoess’ favorite pecan pie – the second ingredient calls for a cup of light karo syrup.

I would suggest Bob White/White Syrup. It is manufactured right here in Buckner and is made by Oldham Countians with pride.

Field hockey team helps clean up roadway

To the editor:

The North Oldham High School Field Hockey team recently picked up litter along a 10-mile stretch of U.S. 42 from Ky. 393 to the Henry County line. We are a small group and when another school event made part of our group unavailable, we decided to complete our work on two weekends. We picked up litter Nov. 21 and Dec. 5.

The first weekend, we broke into four teams and covered about 13 miles of roadway. The weather  was perfect, sunny with the temperature in the 50s. We picked up litter and recycling and filled more than 40 bags. Luckily, the second weekend was also sunny and clear with a temperature in the 30s. Four more teams finished the last seven miles, picking up an additional 27 bags of litter and recycling.

Our team worked well with many families coming out to do the work together. We didn’t come across many surprises along the way. We found lots of beer cans and fast food containers. We did come across a few car wreck sites with lots of broken pieces of plastic. This gave parents another chance to talk about driving safety with our teenagers.

Our 10-mile stretch of U.S. 42 is part of a Kentucky Scenic Highway and it is indeed beautiful. It was a pleasure to walk along and we received many waves, honks and thank-yous from Oldham residents. Everyone left with a smile on their face knowing they had made it a bit more beautiful. Thanks for the opportunity to serve our community.
