Put school board on Channel 25

To the editor:I just received a notice from the Oldham County PVA that the assessed value of my home has been increased in accordance with Kentucky law.I am not questioning the law. However, I question the increase in value, given the present situation that the prices for existing houses have dropped substantially in the last few months. As a result of the increase in value, I will be paying the school board about $200 more in taxes with little understanding of what they are going to do with the money. I urge The Oldham Era and other concerned citizens to speak openly and loudly and initiate a campaign to urge the school board to begin having its meetings in the Fiscal Court Building so its proceedings can be broadcasted on Channel 25, thereby making it easier for the taxpayers to understand and grasp the issues that face that group. After all, the school board members are elected officials and they should not be afraid to face their constituencies. I am sure that fiscal court members would be more than willing to share their court room with the government agency that takes almost 70 percent of every tax dollar paid by the people. Scheduling should not be a problem.Ruth K. Hoelscher, La Grange

Era should apologize for coverage of accidentTo the editor:I was shocked and appalled at the article written by Jacquelyn Stoess Hack in regards to the accidental death of Steven Schmidthuber. It is obvious that Ms. Hack is not a parent. Our county newspaper should take a cue from the reporting of the accident from The Courier-Journal. Do you really think that it was necessary to report the details of the Schmidthuber’s personal tragedy? Do you even know what it is like to lose a child? The police reported that no charges were filed, so there was no need for the heart-wrenching details. All the parents in Oldham County may not be phoning your office, nor writing you letters, but you can trust me when I say that we are collectively disgusted with The Oldham Era over their complete lack of sensitivity to fellow Oldham County parents. I feel that the Oldham Era should publicly and privately apologize to the Schmidthuber family.P.S. Please remember this family in your prayers.Davonna Riggs, La Grange
