It started with a late night phone call, the kind that gives you a sick feeling in the pit of your stomach. On the other end of the line was a frantic voice telling me my brother-in-law, James, had been killed by a gunshot.
To have a family member taken away in this heinous manner is the kind of thing that can rip a family apart.
Our family, we thought, was lucky in some way. In the few days after James’ death, while we finalized funeral arrangements, two suspects were apprehended, charged and jailed.
