To the editor:
Liberty Elementary closing at the end of 2014 school year? Isn’t it ironic the school superintendent is money conscious now?
This probably isn’t a big deal or issue to other Oldham Countians outside of the Liberty school district, but let me tell you what it means to those of us who have been fortunate to have had children in the Liberty school district or attended Liberty.
It may be a “money pit” to [Superintendent Paul] Upchurch and school board members. It doesn’t have all the modern styles and conveniences of recent “shrines” built in Oldham County, but it has heart and character.
I agree the teachers, faculty and students make for the excellence of a school, and Liberty has had some of the finest.
Most that have had the “Liberty” experience will tell you there is so much more to that school. It’s more than bricks and mortar, it’s the history, the land, the value to the people around it.
How dare a “small” group of people that have taxed us to death and voted themselves raises and spent our hard earned money frivolously decide the cost of a historical landmark is too much to bear!
Is Mr. Upchurch afraid it will cut into his next pay increase?
What are you planning with the expensive property bought around Liberty for the purpose of adding to it or building another behind it? It was purchased with our tax dollars!
The school board is voted in by the people of Oldham County, it’s our tax dollars being spent, it’s our school!
Taxpayers in Liberty school district should decide what’s done with our money concerning Liberty.
The superintendent and school board have already proven they don’t have sense, just our tax dollars. Leave Liberty alone! Mr. Upchurch is the expense we can’t afford!
