La Grange Elementary Leadership Club students hosted members of the La Grange business community, mayor, Oldham County board members and Supt. Dr. Will Wells for lunch Dec. 19.  Event coordinator and Literacy Coach Kelley Johnstone worked on conversation and oratory skills with the 10 student ambassadors leading up to the occasion.

An entirely student-led performance, speakers shared with the audience how Franklin Covey’s 7 Habits [of Highly Effective Teens has impacted their lives since implementing the Leader in Me program this school year.  George Anderson welcomed the audience and explained the purpose of the lunch. Laura Perry briefly introduced each of the habits in “kid terms”. Nick Cox gave an example of how employing a win-win attitude resolved a recent dispute with his little brother with mutually satisfying results. Kimberly McGaughey related Habit Number 1, putting first things first to her life and remarked after the program that she thought she’d be nervous speaking but it was actually “a lot of fun.”

The audience was also entertained by Tracy Simpson’s first grade and Jessie Gray’s second grade classes who sang a completely student composed 7 habits song accompanied by music teacher Jamie Albritton on guitar.  Fifth grade students sang entertainer Will-I-Am’s character building song “What I Am.”
