CRESTWOOD – After a slow start, an 11-2 first quarter scoring run gave the South Oldham High School Lady Dragons the cushion they needed to roll to a 68-23 win over Trimble County in the opening round of the 29th District tournament Tuesday.
The Lady Dragons led just 4-2 until just under the five-minute mark of the first quarter when they took off on their scoring run to pick up their 20th win of the season against just five losses and advance to the district finals Friday against the winner of the North Oldham vs. Oldham County game.
“We wanted to get some good momentum and we did that,” SOHS coach Frank Wright said. “We basically just wanted to play hard and do what we normally do.”
Wright, who was also able to celebrate the birth of his fourth grandchild just before the game started, saw junior guard Jasmine Whitfield lead the Lady Dragons with 16 points. Guard Emily Housley scored 11 and forward Mary Dye had 10 as did Lissa Gamsky. No Trimble County player scored in double figures.
“We were able to go deep into our bench and get the starters some rest and you can always use that this time of year,” Wright said.
The district finals are set for 6 p.m. Friday at SOHS. The regional tournament will start the following Monday at Gallatin County High School.
