Lady Colonels strike early for girls soccer district win

-A A +A

Two first half goals give Oldham 2-0 victory over South

SHELBYVILLE-- Make it three out of four.

Oldham County captured its third girls' soccer 16th District title in four years Thursday night. On the strength of two early goals, The Lady Colonels downed South Oldham 2-0 Thursday night at the Shelby County Athletic Complex.   The victory gives Oldham County homefield advantage in next week’s 8th Region Tournament and avenged an earlier loss to the Dragons this season.

“Redemption,” Colonels Coach Dan Schulz said. “They beat us earlier in the season, 2-1, and that was the only loss against region competition for us.”

And given recent history – South Oldham and Oldham have met in the region final five times since 2000 (all Dragon victories) - Schulz knows a rematch is a distinct possibility.

“We’ll probably see them again,” he said.

In Thursday night’s rematch of the Aug. 31 meeting won 2-1 by South Oldham in Crestwood the Colonels (13-6-1) turned the tables on the Dragons (13-7-1), who led 2-0 at halftime in the first matchup.

Oldham County sophomore Haley Kemper scored two minutes into the match when she found the back of the net with a shot from about 22 yards out.

Then in the 20th minute sophomore Shelby Cohen found the net for the Colonels again.

“They were kind of startled early on and we kind of took advantage of that,” Schulz said. “After that they settled down and it was back-and-forth after that.”

That was all Oldham County needed. Now the Colonels, who have seven region runner-up finishes (to South in 2000, ’01, ’02, ’03 and ’08; North Oldham in ’06 and Christian Academy of Louisville in ’10), are setting their sights on a regional title.

“We’re still trying to get one,” Schulz said.
