CRESTWOOD – The final goal for South Oldham High School senior Lauren Jones’ high school basketball career fell into place Tuesday.

Jones, a 5-foot-9 guard, has been named to the 2008 Kentucky All-Star team for the annual series with Indiana in June.

“Oh yeah, it’s always been a goal of mine since my freshman year,” Jones said. “I have always wanted to be the first kid from South Oldham to make the all-star team. It’s pretty surreal, it hasn’t really sunk in.”

Jones joins the ranks of other standouts from the county to make the team like Rita Berry, Holly Davis, Leslie Texas and Kyra Elzy — all Oldham County High School graduates.

Jones has been named to a guard-heavy squad that will coached by Shelby County’s Sally Zimmerman. She is joined on the team by Louisville guards Miss Basketball Tia Gibbs from Butler and Ceira Ricketts of Fairdale, along with swingman Monique Reid of Fern Creek. The Eighth Region is also represented by Shelby County guard Raechelle Gray.

Jones was selected from a pool of 40 players who met Friday and Saturday at Georgetown College to try out in front of a group of coaches from around the state.

“It was very intense,” Jones said. “We had three two-hour practice sessions with a lot of drills and running. We were constantly playing.”

Jones, who has signed to play at Austin Peay University, averaged 21 points and five rebounds a game as a senior for SOHS and led the state in free-throw shooting, hitting nearly 90 percent.

She said she kept in shape by playing and through individual sessions in preperation for the tryouts.

Kentucky will face an Indiana club that will have plenty of size.

“We don’t know a whole lot about them right now, just that they will be a little bigger,” Jones said. “Coach said she expects us to win both games.”

The series will have a new format played in one weekend. The first game is June 13 at Indianapolis’ Conseco Fieldhouse and June 15 at The Gardens in Louisville.
