Headed to nationals

Austin Major of the North Oldham Debate Team, coached by Merl McBee, won the Joseph M. Rumbaugh State Oration competition March 29 at Maysville Country Club for the Kentucky Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.

This marks the ninth year that a member of McBee’s debate team has won both the local Thruston Chapter oration contest and the Kentucky Society of the Sons of the American Revolution oration contest. McBee has been coaching debate for 17 years, first at South Oldham High for 12 years and then five years at North Oldham. Major now advances to the national competition in Sacramento, Calif., on July 6.

Major has also been named as a page for four weeks in Congress, starting July 7 in Washington, D.C. One page is chosen from each state.
