North Oldham vs. Ballard

Score: 78-68 Ballard.

When: Dec. 2. 

Where: Ballard. 

Key players: North Oldham’s Alex Foley and Tyler St. Julian. Ballard’s Wes Cox and Ian Chiles. 

Game highlights: After falling behind early, the Mustangs fought their way back against the No. 5 ranked Bruins in the third period behind the scoring of guards Alex Foley and Tyler St. Julian and the ballhandling of Chris Menefee against the Bruins’ press.

NOHS tied the game at 59 late in the third period, but then went cold from the field missing six straight shots. Ballard managed to pull away when Ty Parker hit a flat-footed three from the right corner to give Ballard a 62-59 lead.

The Bruins went on a 9-0 scoring run to lead 68-59 before NOHS could stop the run. Foley hit six three-pointers to lead the Mustangs with 24 points. St. Julian scored on a variety of drives to finish with 21 points.

Senior guards Wes Cox and Ian Chiles paced Ballard with 18 and 17 points respectively.

South Oldham vs. Ludlow

Score: 83-50 South Oldham.

When: Dec. 2.

Key players: South Oldham’s Drew Kraemer and Casey Jackson. Ludlow’s Kyle Williamson. 

Game highlights: After falling behind in the first quarter, the Dragons came alive on offense thanks to a pressing defense that allowed them to score easy baskets. SOHS trailed 17-11 at the end of the first quarter, but dominated the second and third quarters, outscoring Ludlow 49-12 to pull away. Senior guard Drew Kraemer led the Dragons with 27 points.

Oldham County vs. Western Hills

Score: 38-36 Western Hills.

Key players: Oldham County’s Audri Beaudrie and Emily Lape. Western Hills’  Tara Arnold. 

Game highlights: Western Hills overcame a two-point halftime deficit by outscoring OCHS 12-6 in the third period, then held the Lady Colonels off behind the shooting of guard Tara Arnold. Arnold led the Lady Wolverines with 19 points. Guard Krystal Cammuse hit three three-pointers during a late run that saw Western Hills build a nine-point lead before the Lady Colonels got back into it. OCHS was led by Audri Beaudrie with 10 points.

South Oldham vs. Christian Academy

Score: 57-47 Christian Academy.

When: Dec. 2. 

Where: South Oldham. 

Key players: South Oldham’s Allison Reynolds and Jordann McGuffin. Christian Academy’s Antonita Slaughter and Claire Buchanan. 

Game highlights: The Lady Dragons couldn’t hold an eight-point halftime lead as CAL’s inside-outside combo of 6-foot forward Antonita Slaughter and guard Claire Buchanan led the Lady Centurions back in the third quarter. Buchanan hit five threes in the game, including three in the third period to finish with 23 points while Slaughter dominated inside to finish with 19 points. CAL outscored SOHS 39-21 in the second half. Allison Reynolds led SOHS with 10 points.

Oldham County vs. Ryle

Score: 59-54 Ryle.

When: Dec. 3. 

Where: Oldham County. 

Key players: Oldham County’s Eric Dunlap and Brandon Mason. Ryle‘s Kurt Russell and Tate Nichols.

Game highlights: Ryle gained control of the game in the third period when they hit five three-pointers to take a seven-point lead heading into the early stages of the fourth quarter.

The Colonels managed to battle back and cut the lead to three points on three different occasions, but never could catch up against the much bigger Raiders.

Kurt Russell led the Raiders with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

OCHS was led by Eric Dunlap with 22 points and Brandon Mason with 13.

South Oldham vs. Shelby County

Score: 47-46 Shelby County.

When: Friday. 

Where: Shelby County. 

Key players: South Oldham’s Vicki Bray and Jordann McGuffin. Shelby County’s Haleigh LeCompte and Marissa Raisor. 

Game highlights: With a chance to tie on the last possession the Lady Dragons hit a layup instead of shooting a three allowing Shelby County to hold on to the win.

The game was tight all the way through with neither team building much of a lead. Shelby senior guard Haleigh LeCompte hit a free throw to give the Lady Rockets the three-point advantage in the final 20 seconds.

Key players: North Oldham’s Nicole Bryant and Jessica Andres. Spencer County’s Kenisha Marshall. 

Game highlights: After NOHS built a 26-23 hafltime lead, Spencer County dominated the third quarter with a 14-2 scoring run to break the contest open. Center Kenisha Marshall, a 6-foot-1 senior, took over inside for the Bears in the third quarter and led them with 18 points and blocked eight shots out of a sticky Spencer zone that shut the Lady Mustangs’ offense down in the second half. NOHS was led by Nicole Bryant and Jessica Andres with 11 points each.

South Oldham vs. Western Hills

Score: 61-57 Western Hills.

When: Friday. 

Where: Western Hills. 

Key players: South Oldham’s Drew Kraemer, Casey Jackson and Brice Jewett. Western Hills’  TJ Riddle and Nolan McGaughey. 

Game highlights: The Dragons lost a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter as Western Hills guard TJ Riddle scored 10 of his game-high 26 points to lead the Woverines to the win. Western Hills outscored SOHS 23-9 in the fourth quarter behind Riddle and guard Nolan McGaughey who combined for 18 points in the period.

Score: 83-32 Boone County.

Key players: Oldham County’s Kelsey Lummus. Boone County’s Jocelyn Davis and Jacy Bradley. 

Game highlights: Boone County exploded for 52 points in the second half to win this one going away. Forward Jocelyn Davis led Boone with 18 points followed by Jacy Bradley with 17.

Swimming

YMCA Orcas hosting tryouts

When: Tuesday and Dec. 18. 

Where: Oldham County YMCA pool, Buckner. 

What: The Oldham County YMCA Orcas swim team is hosting tryouts at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and Dec.18 at the YMCA pool.

The Oldham County YMCA Orca Swim Team is designed for 7 to 15-year-olds and it follows the same mission as the YMCA.

The Orcas will start their season Jan. 5. Tryouts are from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., participants do not have to attend both tryouts.

Tryouts will consist of a 100 freestyle swim, 100 freestyle kick, and a 100 individual medley which is composed of four 25 yard swims of the butterfly, backstroke, breastroke, and freestyle. 

The tryout helps determine eligibilty for the team and which groups the swimmers will potentially practice with.

The Orcas practice Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Each group will swim for one hour between the times of 4 and 7 p.m. on Everyone will practice 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday.

Soccer

Oldham Legends hosting tryouts

When: Jan. 5 to Jan. 12. 

Where: Oldham County YMCA indoor arena, Buckner and Goshen Elementary School. 

What: The Oldham County Legends soccer program is hosting tryouts for several teams at the Oldham County YMCA indoor arena.

Tryouts for Under-12 girls are from 6 to 7 p.m. Jan. 5 and Jan. 12.

Tryouts for Under-13 girls are from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 6 and Jan. 13 at Goshen Elementary School.

Tryouts for the Under-15 mixed team are from 6 to 7 p.m. Jan. 6 and Jan. 8 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the YMCA.

The tryout fee is $5 for the cost of a T-shirt and will be collected on the first night. 

Players should bring water, shin guards and tennis shoes.
